Women In The Bible Series: Wisdom: A Woman Called By This Name

Lesson Four: Wisdom: A Woman Called By This Name
Lesson Three: Zipporah: Married to the MinistryLesson Two: Tamar: Overcoming Your Past | Lesson One: Leah: The Unloved

Hello ladies, and welcome to my blog! This year I am going to write a series called Women of the Bible, where I will explore the lives of some of the Bible’s most notable female characters. I believe every woman’s story can be found in God’s Word – and those stories can bring hope and encouragement. I will touch on some serious topics such as rape, suicide and jealousy, along with some lighter ones such as love, righteousness and more. Together, we can discover what the Lord is speaking to His beautiful bride.

Before we begin, I also want to thank you for joining me throughout last year’s series on Church Decorum. If you like what you read, send me comments and let me know – it encourages me to keep writing!

Taking this journey together,

First Lady Vivian Pruitte

Proverbs 1&2

Picking up the bottle for the third time, she twists off the cap and pours several out into her hands. She separates and counts them out slowly and methodically onto the bathroom sink. She looks ominously at the ragged reflection which stares back at her from her vanity mirror.

“Am I strong enough to go through with this?” She has been repeating silently over the last hour. “No one will miss me. They’ll be better off without me.” These thoughts run incessantly in her mind. Bracing herself with one hand she uses her other to fill the glass with cold water. She rubs the glass across her pulsing forehead now scorching from the well of fiery tears. As she picks up the handful of pills and slowly raises them to her mouth she hears a voice.

“Put that pill bottle down,” it cries out to her.

She adorns herself, not with jewelry you can see, but with precious stones contained within her. She hopes someone would seek her as they would a hidden treasure – incessantly. People say that black is flattering and goes with everything, but she wears white, always without a wrinkle, crease or blemish. You hear her voice in the streets as she cries out for someone to embrace her, take her home and make her an integral part of their life. If you listen to her carefully and open your heart to receive her, she will illuminate your path like a ray of sunlight as you walk through this journey called life. Many call her a voice, but she is a woman called Wisdom.

A woman is a valued treasure. Adam woke up from his sleep, saw Eve and said, “WOE-MAN, take a look at that creature. She looks different than me. She walks differently. She feels softer and her voice is unlike mine.” Woman was made to compliment the man. God built her from the man’s side because she was to be a supporter to man, yet have her own identity and role. It is no wonder that the Bible uses the female pronoun when it talks about wisdom – because she is as unique and distinctive as the woman God created.

The Bible personifies wisdom as a woman. It says in Proverbs 1:20, “Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets.” She is a woman that is desperately seeking for someone to hear her. “If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:2-4). Although you can hear her cry out, you have to make an effort to find her. But once you do, you will understand what the Lord is trying to tell you through her.

Wisdom is telling you that there is nothing more precious to the Father than you. Her message to you is: The Lord made you fearfully and wonderfully. He took the time to make you distinctive. No one and nothing is worth losing you. Your life is precious to the Lord. Someone has already died and paid the price for you to live. Your repayment for this death is your life. Do you hear her? She is calling out to you. Wisdom has her arms open and ready for you to embrace her.
