In keeping with what’s proving to be a special tradition, Holiness Tabernacle Church Of God In Christ gave away more than 200 turkeys November 20 to needy residents in the Woodbridge community.
“I’ve always been a firm believer that before we can meet the spiritual needs of people, we must first meet their physical needs,” said Eddie B Pruitte, Jr., pastor of Holiness Tabernacle.
This year’s give away saw a serpentine line of people waiting an hour ahead of time for a free turkey.
Bettie Watson, a local resident, was one of the people in line to get a turkey. “Giving these turkeys away is a blessing,” said Watson. “Any little thing is a blessing especially during this day and time.”
The brain child of Pastor Pruitte, HTC’s annual Turkey Give Away is one of many programs that the church has to help meet the physical needs of the community. The church is also a part of the SHARE Food Network which provides nutritional groceries at affordable prices.
The turkey giveaway is also a great way to let the community know that the church is here and ready to serve. Consuelo Washington, another turkey recipient, didn’t know the church was in the area until the day of the give away.
“This means a lot. I’m gracious. I never knew the church was here until today,” she said. “It’s great that God has given [the church] the means to do this and not expect anything back.
Next year, Pastor Pruitte plans to double the amount of turkeys given this year and hand out 500 turkeys, because as long as there is a need out there, he hopes to fill it. Only then when the community has the food, clothing and peace of mind it needs, the needs of its spirit will be met and HTC will be here to meet that need as well.
“This give away really helps,” said Milagros Capolupo. “It makes me happy. God bless you and may God keep giving you a lot of things to share with people, not only food, but faith and peace.”
