The Reward of the Secret Place

The Reward of the Secret Place

Psalm 91

I examined Psalm 91 and a few things stood out to me about the writer, in particular, the relationship between him and God. As believers today we can learn from this Psalmist who exemplified the characteristics of a true believer. By faith choosing God as his protector allows the believer to find all that he needs or can desire.

Something else that stood out about this relationship was that the Psalmist was a worshipper. “He that dwells, that sits down, in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”  A great security is promised to believers in the midst of danger.

This is the character of a true believer – he that dwells in the secret place of the Most High. He is at home with God, returns to God, he rests in God, he acquaints himself with God, and makes heart-work of the service of God, worships within the veil and loves to be alone with God to communicate with God in complete solitude.  It is a privilege and comfort to know that when you are abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, God shelters you. No matter what may come your way, when you are abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, He protects you.

The writer knew by abiding under the shadow of the Almighty that God had his back, no matter what fiery trails may come. That’s why verse seven reminds us that, “Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evil will not touch you.Stay in the secret place and watch God keep you safe. He will reward you for staying in the secret place. The writer declared this of His Protector in verses two and three.

What are the rewards of the secret place?

To abide means to continue in a particular condition, attitude, or a relationship.  The writer of Psalms 91 was declaring his relationship with God. He was declaring that he has complete faith and trust in God that he knows without a shadow of a doubt that God is his protector and that God will carry him through all dangers and fears of life. Hebrews 11:6 states, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Where is the secret place?

The secret place is in our hearts and in our minds. When the two connect and there is no doubting or wavering in our faith, when we have complete trust in God and walk according to His statutes, there is no good thing will He withhold from them who walk upright. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” Therefore, God desires to reward you in the secret place. God only wants us to stay in the secret place, to dwell there and abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

There is a reward in the secret place.
