My First Year of High School

by Dominick Brown

High school. A lot of things come to mind when you hear the words high school, mainly things you’ve seen on tv/in movies. As frightening as they may make it seem, high school isn’t really anything like what they make it to be.

So far, I haven’t really found or seen a difference from middle school. It’s just the days go by so much faster and you’re more responsible for getting your own work done, and turning it in. If you choose not to get your work done then the teachers don’t really care and won’t bother you about it because it’s your grade, not theirs.

The only other noticeable difference I have experienced would be the people you go to school with – i.e. your “friends”. I mean yes, it’s nice to have a few friends here and there, but a lot of your friendships from middle school start to fade quickly. The person you would see every day and talk to every day, you now hardly ever see or talk to. Soon the group of fifty plus so called “friends” have slowly decreased down to maybe about five to seven actual friends. Everyone else more so become people you associate with or occasionally say ‘hey’ to every now and then. And that hasn’t really been a problem. It has made it easier for me to stay more focused on my education.

Those are really the only two major things I have experienced and noticed since I started my high school journey. High school is not as bad as the tv shows and movies make it appear to be. Especially if you just stay focused on your work and not let anything distract you from achieving your goals.

With this being said, I’m pretty interested to see what the rest of this school year has to bring.
