Vessels of Honor – February 2K15 WTLB

By Missionary Myrna Howard

John 2:1-10

It has been recorded that this passage is about the first miracle of Jesus. There is so much meat and so much to understand the value in this passage. We have heard so many times the word “vessel,” but when you add God – it completely changes the response. Deep inside, we know the meaning of the word.

vesselsAs believers, we should be keenly aware of the type of vessels we are. When God created us, He made us as special containers. It is time to stop listening from afar off – and instead, read and listen to God with understanding. When we read the passage, beginning at verse 1 through ten, we cannot overlook the message. There was a request and an expectation that the request would be answered.

When we have special things that we care about, we like to find the perfect container or box to keep it in good condition. When you find that special container, you are so pleased because you know it will fit perfectly.

When God pours out of His Spirit, He is seeking for those special containers. The ones that are ready to receive. In this passage, the water pots Jesus used were the ones designed for purification purposes. Why would He want to use this type of container for this first miracle?

To answer that, I must ask another question: what kind of water pot are we? Are we the kind that will call God’s attention? The water pots that Jesus used were purified and ready for use. God is looking for those containers that can be used by Him.

Too often, our minds are messed up. We try to be filled with our own strength. We’re looking for a quick fix. But, it takes a consistent prayer life, fasting and living holy – not just inside, but outside of the church – in order to be vessels of honor, ready for use by the Master.

In the passage, Jesus used 6 water pots. We need to be like those water pots. I want Jesus to use me. God won’t put a new thing in an old vessel.

Jesus told the servants to “fill the water pots with water.” In this New Year of 2015, don’t look back at what may have happened in 2014. Embrace the new. Let us all prepare our hearts to receive that living water that will change and transform us into the new creatures God designed us to be. Allow God to fill you up.

Your newness will be noticed. People in distress and in bondage will be able to taste it. They will taste the fruit of the Spirit within you. So if there are any cracks in your water pot, ask the Lord to fix you up right away! If you are willing, you can embrace the New Year as a vessel of honor, ready to be used by God.
