“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.” (Act 2:1-3 KJV)
The Bible tells us that Holy Ghost is necessary to help guide you through your life, but people who are seeking to be filled with the Holy Ghost sometimes seem to have a tough time in ushering in the Holy Spirit. Have you ever wondered why?
When the altar call is made, those seeking to be filled with the Holy Ghost are often tarrying; others may be praying with them. Too often, persons praying at the altar are doing and saying different things. However, the bible says in Acts 2:1, "…and when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all in one place with one accord."
The day of the Pentecost was the second great festival of the Jewish Year. It was a harvest festival when the first fruits of the grain harvest were presented to God (Lev. 23:17).
In like manner, the day of Pentecost symbolizes for the church the beginning of God’s harvest for souls in the world. They were all with one accord with one mind or the same mind in obedience to Jesus' instructions to wait for the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit.
Joel 2:28 says, "…and it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh." The prophet Joel was predicting a day when God would pour out His Spirit on whoever called on the name of the Lord.
That is why saints of old who were seeking the baptism of the Holy Spirit would gather together and tarry at the altar, repeating “Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!” over and over until they were all with one accord, crying out and calling on the name of Jesus to help usher in the Holy Ghost.
Besides being on one accord with your fellow saints, there are some other conditions that have to be met before the Holy Ghost can dwell in you:
- You must be saved – Baptism in the Holy Spirit is intended for all who profess faith in Christ, have been born again, and thereby have received the indwelling of the spirit.
- You must be actively following Christ – One of Christ’s key goals in His earthly mission was to baptize His followers in the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33).
Even Jesus Christ Himself did not enter His ministry until he had been anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power (Acts 10:38, Luke 4:1,18). It is very important to be filled with the Holy Ghost!
