I’m a senior in high school, and the application process for college is long and nerve-wracking. At first, senior year felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders because it was my very last year of high school. I soon figured out that wasn’t the case. Deadlines, SAT’s, essays and so much more started appearing rapidly in my life. Just the thought of college stressed me out, and in all honesty, I felt like giving up and maybe putting college off for a year.

That was not how I wanted to spend my Saturday. After some time had passed, however, my aunt was ready to go and I decided to accompany her. Upon arriving to the salon, after a lengthy commute, there was a long wait and barely a place to sit down. There was one open seat next to a lady in a bright green shirt that didn’t look very welcoming, but I’ve learned that you should never judge a book by its cover.

Before I even sat down, the lady had already started a conversation with me. Not too long after, the topic of school arose. The school that had sparked my interest for a while was Virginia Tech. When I told Mrs. Winbush that I wanted to go to Virginia Tech her smile stretched from ear to ear. She shouted, “I’m a Virginia tech Alum!” By the end of both our visits, we had exchanged emails; Mrs. Winbush gave me a whole list of scholarships to apply to and she fully encouraged me to begin looking at not only Virginia Tech, but other colleges as well.

I know it wasn’t by chance that I ran into this lady. God brought someone into my life to encourage me and to show me that I was being narrow-minded which definitely hindered me from going a step further in my college application process. I’ve been praying about college for a while – and what used to be a nerve wrecking process is now somewhat exciting to me. Every time I reach a stumbling block with my applications, God puts someone or something in my life to help me, encourage me and push me because I am definitely going to college.

The person that came in last place may look at themselves as a winner, though, because even though they came last they persevered until the end. In God's race, the race is not given to the swift or strong but the one who endureth till the end. You can walk, skip, run, jog or even crawl as long as you keep going. In a race everyone is moving towards the finish line. In God’s race, His people are moving closer to Him and that is our finish line.

During the race things may get tough. You may feel like you're not in shape for this, or you're too tired, but never give up! In a race, why train and prepare for so long just to give up? In God’s race why obey Him and praise Him just to give up? In either type of race, you never turn back because it may look dark and stormy for a time, but there's always a prize at the end. Whether it be a trophy, a medal or a certificate. In God’s race it may be a blessing or even entering His kingdom.

For me, my race wasn't always easy. For example in high school, the people I was surrounded by weren’t always running the same race as I was. What I'm trying to say is that, you may encounter people that don't go to church, don't believe that prayer works, or even believe in a different God than you do – but that doesn't mean that we join their race. What we're supposed to do is tell people how good our race is, so that they join our race and walk, run, skip or crawl on our journey to God with us.

Again, my race wasn't always easy. At one point I was just starting off the race. There were times I didn't want to go to church or praise God, but when I continued to walk my race I realize the importance of going to church and praising God. That walking turned into jogging and then running. I saw myself grow in my race and the joy that goes through your body when you realize you're doing God’s work is unspeakable. I may get tired, but I will never ever ever sit down!

Below are three poems written by Crystal McCown, Tamika Alexander and Asha King for the 2011 King & Queen Pageant.

Jesus Is The Light

Jesus Is The Light
Jesus is the light of the world.

He will shine all the time.
He's like the sun of our day and the moon of our nights.

Jesus shines all the time no matter what.
Nobody can shine like He can.

So bless the name of Jesus Christ
Because Jesus is the light and the light will shine.

by Crystal McCown

What Is Love?

Love is something many people take for granted
Although it’s not something that is handed
Love is getting good grades in school
Even though school doesn’t rule

Love is going to church and enjoying yourself
Its where you become more self
Love is understanding the messages pastor is preaching
Knowing you are listening and believing

Love is knowing knowledge is an axe
And Wisdom is the edge
Love is god changing his direction
But never his promises

Love is when your soul may ache, and your heart can break
Your confidence can shake, but your life is never a mistake
Love is not knowing what your future is
But knowing who truly holds it

Love is having faith in God
Conscious of the wonders he can do
Love is appreciating God
For the blessings he bestows upon you

Love is Jesus being obedient to his father
As well as me being obedient to my mother
Love is Jesus dying on the cross for our sins
Just so everybody knows – Jesus wins

by Tamika Alexander

He's Always With You

Walk upright he says
Do not walk as if the world is on your shoulders
You have too much to be happy for
Smile, everyday

Do you know why?

Because I’m always with you
I wake you up everyday and I lay you down to sleep
As long as you have faith in me, I will have faith in you
I’ll bring you out of the darkest point in your life, so you can see the light

Do you know why?

Because I’m always with you
I will teach you that it may get worse before it gets better
And I will bring you through the toughest weather
You just have to remember I am always with you

Vacation Bible School was a smashing success! With three days, I learned three different stories which were very important. VBS was broken into four different stations: Bible time, snack, arts and crafts and play.

View More Photos

p>On the first day we learned about gratitude. We were given a memory verse which came from Psalm 25: 4-5, Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. What is gratitude? The meaning in the dictionary is: the quality of being thankful. In other words gratitude means being grateful and appreciative. To me gratitude is having the right attitude.

Our topic for the second day was compassion. The dictionary says compassion means concern for the suffering or misfortunes of others. But having true compassion is all about love and kindness in action.

Our Bible story was the parable of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:30-37. The story was about a man who was robbed and left by the wayside. A priest who should have helped him didn’t and a Levite came by and didn’t help either. But a Samaritan, the least likely of the three to help, was full of compassion and helped him. The Samaritan cleaned him up, took him to the inn, and paid the innkeeper to take care of him saying, “Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.”

The last night we discussed forgiveness. The meaning of forgiveness is to pardon, have mercy, and clemency among other things. It is much easier to forgive someone than it is to forget. But, obeying and following the Bible should make it easier for us to both forgive and forget.

Do you really know who Jesus is? If you did, you would know He wants us to exhibit all these characteristics – gratitude, compassion and forgiveness – and so much more.

	By Asha King

I am currently reading a book called A Child Called It, an autobiographical account by David Pelzer. It is about an abusive mother and how she mistreated her son, David. Although she had four children at the time, she treated David very awful. David was held back a grade purposely even though he was at the head of his class. David’s mother starved him for ten consecutive days, made him drink ammonia, lay on the stove, stabbed him and did other harsh things to make her son’s life miserable. While his mother turned to alcohol, David turned to the Lord. He prayed that his mother would stop, but she did not. He continued to put his faith in the Lord, but it decreased after a while because his mother showed no remorse. He started thinking that God hated him because of the life he had to live. Not only was his mother beating him until he was black and blue, but he was bullied at school.

The last chapter was called “The Lord’s Prayer”. David believed that there was no God. He started thinking he was alone in his struggle to survive. David began to give up on words like hope and faith, believing these words only existed in fairy tales. The last thing he did was clasp his hands together, bend his head and closed his eyes. He prayed with all his heart, and with peace in his heart, whispered “…and deliver me from evil. Amen.”

This book shows that no matter what you’re going through, God will help you through it. Though David was so young, he still turned to the Lord.
